Why isn't gene xxx listed?
The content at FlyNome is contributed by its users. If you can't find a certain gene in our database, it's simply because no one has contributed that information yet. You can request an entry by specifying a person who should know the origin of the gene's name. FlyNome will send an email to that person, requesting them to visit FlyNome and make the entry.

Where can I find molecular/genetic/etc. info on these genes?
FlyBase is a great resource and starting point for all things Drosophila. You can link directly to FlyBase from each entry here on FlyNome.

Where can I find info on Drosophila?
The Interactive Fly is a good primer for Drosophila information. You can also take a look at our other links.

Why is there more than one entry for some genes?
FlyNome does not limit the number of entries per gene. Perhaps someone can add more detail or an interesting anecdote about the naming of a gene after the initial entry.

What if I see an entry that I know is wrong?
Please let us know via email. We do our best to resolve any inaccuracies or conflicts. See our policies for more detail.

Why do I need to register in order to make entries?
Our primary reason for requiring registration prior to allowing entries is to provide a limited accountability for those making entries. Your name and/or email address will be associated with your entries. Registration also ensures that we have a mechanism to contact you in the event of a potential error in or conflict with your entries. See our policies for more detail.

I forgot my password - what do I do?
We can email your password to you.

I didn't confirm my registration and I lost my registration code - what do I do?
We can email your confirmation code to you.

What do you do with my email address/why do you need it?
Requiring a valid email address ensures we have a mechanism to contact you in the event of a potential error in or conflict with your entries. We will contact you via email in these instances. You may also receive an email upon major changes to FlyNome's policies or to the site itself. See our policies for more detail.

Do you use cookies?
Yes, we use cookies to enhance your experience at FlyNome and to monitor your login status when making entries. Consequently, you may not be able to make entries if you do not accept cookies from FlyNome. See our policies for more detail.

What technologies does the FlyNome site use?
FlyNome is hosted by HostRocket on Linux (RedHat 6.22) servers. The database utilizes MySQL v3.23.24. Interactive content is served via PERL CGI scripts. JavaScript is used for some form validation and other dynamic content.

Who created FlyNome?
FlyNome was created and is maintained by Christopher B. Yohn, Ph.D., a scientist who at one point worked in the area of Drosophila developmental genetics in the laboratory of Ruth Lehmann, Ph.D. at the Skirball Institute in New York. While Chris is no longer a "fly pusher" he still maintains the site. You can contact him via email.

What is the history of FlyNome?
FlyNome originated in early 2001, underwent development through several months and went live in November 2001. For more detail, see the What's New page.

Can I edit entries after I've submitted them?
Editing of entries by users is not currently supported. This functionality will be added in a future version of FlyNome. If you need to edit an entry after you've submitted it, please send the changes via email.

What's with the advertising?
The curator has paid the hosting charges for FlyNome personally since inception, despite having been out of the Drosophila field since 2002. It is hoped that a few dollars can be made to offset these continuing costs.
